Commercial Aluminium Fire Exit Door Repair at a School in Parkstone
A classroom fire exit door that had stopped closing under control, restored to smooth operation — repaired, not replaced.
The problem
A school in Parkstone was having problems with a commercial aluminium fire exit door on a classroom. The door had stopped closing under control and was slamming shut far too hard.
In a school environment, a faulty door is more than a minor inconvenience. It needs to work reliably, close properly, and cope with regular use throughout the day by staff, pupils and visitors. When a door starts catching, slamming, or failing to close properly, it can quickly create disruption for the site team and raise concerns around safety, security, and day-to-day access.
The assessment
On inspection, the door was suitable for remedial repair rather than full replacement.
Commercial aluminium doors are often subject to heavy daily use, particularly in schools, offices, communal entrances, and public areas of buildings. Over time, this can lead to issues with alignment, closing action, latching speed, locking, pivots, or general operation. In this case, the existing door was still serviceable, so the aim was to restore smooth, controlled operation without replacing the complete door set.
The repair
The remedial work focused on restoring correct operation of the aluminium fire exit door:
- The transom closer at the head of the door was replaced
- The pivot arm and fixings were replaced
- The bottom pivot was adjusted and serviced, but did not need replacing
For busy school buildings, small faults with commercial doors can quickly become bigger problems if left unresolved. Early adjustment and repair can help reduce disruption, improve usability, and extend the working life of the existing door system.
The result
The classroom fire exit door was restored to smooth, controlled operation without the need for full replacement. The door now holds at the intended 90-degree open position when required and closes smoothly.
For the school, this meant less disruption, reduced cost, and continued reliable use of the existing aluminium door — without the expense and waste of replacing a complete commercial door set unnecessarily.
